A movement for public welfare-By Sindhuja Iyer

Dear TDR friends,
I would like to share the ordeal i had to gothrough in Hyderabad , which was once known as the land of Nizams and has now transformed into a land of bundhs....

Every civil society strays from its path once it gets a political touch and the T-war stands no exception. A movement that started off with the view of helping the people of the “Telengana” region overcome the exploitations against them took a new form. It was the aam aadmi as the politicians call it or the common man who had to suffer as a result of the movement meant for his “welfare”. During the bundhthat lasted for over a month the normal flow was disrupted to the extent that people began adapting to it like it was normal way of life in which every possible person exploits them. Survival of the fittest seemed to be the order of the day and everyone from the students, politicians, trade unions to autowallas tried to make the most of the prevailing unrest.
A few organizations that reaped the most out of the situation were the APSRTC that was offered many subsidies including the 400 crore tax exemption. The other section of the society that benefitted the most according to me is that of the autowallas as they might have earned a fortune to last a life time in this short span specially on days when even the trains were stopped and people commuting long distances had to dance to the tunes of these auto drivers.
What amuses me even today is the sudden emergence of patriotism in the students at the time of exams that turns puppets by will in the hands of a few politicians. All the political wannabe’s took up mass destruction of public property to get media attention and strengthen their chances of getting to power in future. The irony of it is that nobody ever realized that they were causing people troubles that they never experienced even when they were being “exploited”, and this could be one of the reasons for the weakening public support to these protesters which led them to call off the 42 days long agitations.
Though nothing was normal everything seemed to be normal with people working long hours as usual and enjoying every bit of what life offered to them, this is what we call the true hyderabadi spirit which believes that come what may life must go on…………….
